‘Protagonist of choice’ by prof. A Thomas McLellan - DDN, 15 March PDF Print E-mail

Seven months into his role as President Obama’s ‘deputy drug czar’, Professor A Thomas McLellan is on a mission to reposition addiction treatment at the heart of mainstream healthcare in the US. Following a lecture at the National Addiction Centre, organised by the Conference Consortium, DrugScope and Drug and Alcohol Findings, DDN had the opportunity to talk to Professor McLellan and found a man willing to sweep aside stigma in favour of wholesale change.

Drugs, Alcohol and Criminal Justice Interventions - 25 June 2009 PDF Print E-mail

dacj2009_building"Drugs, Alcohol and Criminal Justice - how do we make a difference?"

On 25th June 2009, 150 people from various backgrounds, nationwide agency groups, managers and practitioners gathered for the one-day conference at Friends House on London’s Euston Road.  The new interactive format was well received and the positive feedback encouraging, establishing a precedent for this event in the future.

This ‘working’ event was facilitated by the Conference Chair, John Hedge, and highlighted particular examples of inter-disciplinary working by considering actual case scenarios to identify good and effective practice. It successfully provided the audience with an opportunity to consider a number of questions through 4 different workshops:

  • Care management and commissioning
  • Treatment
  • Assessment (CARAT & DIP)
  • Those who access services

We extend grateful thanks to our sponsors, facilitators, rapporteurs and exhibitors as well as Jonathan Aitken and Harry Fletcher for their contribution.  Furthermore, we thank all our participants for joining us and feeding back such positive and useful comments which will enable us to make further organisational improvements next year.

The new venue and its facilities appear to suit everyone and we note that the unpredictable weather raised the temperature in the main theatre!
